A New Vision for Melbourne’s Public Transport System

Melburnians need a more extensive, reliable public transport system to keep up with increased demand and population growth.

Better public transport means less money spent on petrol, less time spent sitting in traffic or standing at a bus stop, fewer traffic jams, increased property values, greater liveability, improved safety and healthier communities. But while the benefits are great, so are the challenges.

In Melbourne, phenomenal growth in ridership shows that Melburnians appreciate the benefits of public transport more than any other city in Australia. Patronage has been growing at a rate of over 10% per year, but the growth in public transport use hasn't been matched by improvements to the transport system. The Greens have a strong commitment to public transport, and believe in federal funding for a well-planned public transport network. But if we are to develop a public transport system which meets the needs of Melburnians, the communities themselves need to be consulted.

The Greens’ vision for Melbourne is a city in which anyone can enjoy life without owning a car. The People Plan is our way of communicating and developing that vision.
